Utah rock stars

This is the approach to the marvellous Zion Canyon, one of the many of fabulous Utah's rocks.  This state offers some of the most fantastic views of canyons - large and small.  We were advised by many who have visited these sites that on no account should we miss Zion and Bryce canyons.  Not as grand as the Grand Canyon, which is beyond compare, but these other two attractions are marvellous in their own right.

Zion Canyon, unlike the Grand Canyon, is seen from the ground up.  The towering walls of the canyon, carved deep by the Virgin River, keep the sightseers captivated and captive down in the canyon, unless they are climbers like Andrew who go one a 4 hour hike up the walls - photos following.

The cliffs are amazing in their size as well as colours.

The Virgin River.  Zion Valley is unlike other canyons in that the river cuts deep and has over the thousands of years carved this distinctive canyon.  It is really the Zion Valley rather than the Zion Canyon though both terms are used.

This is known as the organ.

This photo was taken by Andrew from up top at a trail called Angels Landing.  A four to five hours hike.

Another shot of the valley below.

And a photo of the end of the hike.  Americans use the term hike, Australians bushwalk and New Zealanders tramp.  Just for your inoformation.Posted by Picasa
