Death Valley, California

The landscape in Death Valley reminded us soo much of parts of the lunar like landscape in Cappadocia, Turkey.

To our despair, Apollo Rentals forbid their rental vehicles going to Death Valley in view of the extreme heat. The restriction is until 15 Sept.  Death Valley is the hottest part of the whole of the US, in the height of summer.  September is not the middle of summer any longer.  As the date yesterday was 10 September, we thought we could stretch it a little and we did go into Death Valley.

More coloured rocks - they are quite fabulous.

More lunar-like landscape.

This view is of the salt pan which is the lowest point in the US, more than 200ft below sea level.

Looking down on the rest of the valley.  It is quite an awesome sight.  Our viewing platform was a place called Dante's View.  Whether it has anything to do with Dante's Inferno we don't know, but there are places by the name of Furnace Creek and Funeral Mountains.

More views of the barren ridges in Death Valley.  There are many walks among the canyons in the valley but in spite of it being September and not the hottest month, we did not feel like venturing into those deep crevices on these still pretty hot days.
